I am JoAnne Noyles. I was launched into an unexpected, yet successful artist's journey through very common circumstances. I wanted to buy someone else's art, and my husband said "No. That's too expensive." At the same store was a list to sign up for classes though, and there began my journey in silk. This journey began in 2007. Unexpected success has been the by-product of my husband's frugality, and I am honored beyond words that I am in this position today.
Silk, as a medium for art, has been challenging and exciting at the same time. It seems to have a life and mind of its' own. Except for the boundaries I place on the silk in the form of resist, the dye goes where ever it wants to. It mixes with other colors and creates a richness that I didn't plan, but am happy to live with. Although I do not possess a degree in art, (or in anything else for that matter) this medium is something I can understand. Unlike other mediums which are stiff and unyielding, silk is light, moves, and possesses iridescent qualities. It is extremely durable, can be displayed various ways, can be either transparent or opaque, and can even be worn. Working with silk can be as simple as finger painting, and as complicated as figuring out the mind of your spouse.
My work is currently at Sevigny's Studio in Anchorage, Picture This Gallery in Eagle River, and Downtown Gallery in Talkeetna, Alaska. New pieces are constantly being introduced in both locations. It is certainly my pleasure to introduce you to this exciting world of silk painting.
